We are the wealthiest nation on Earth . . . why are we broke?
SOME FACTS TO CONSIDER
- 44% of every tax dollar goes to the Pentagon
- Another 14% goes to the Dept. of Energy Weapons Program
- Adjusting for inflation, the 2008 budget deficit is equal to the largest debt owed in US history post World War II in 1948
- Between 2004 and 2008 the Federal Gov't shifted financial responsibility for $125 billion to the States.
- Since 2001 $896 billion has been spent on the Global War on Terror (GWOT). This is separate from the Pentagon budget.
- California's portion of the GWOT is $115 billion
- California's 2009 budget had a $42 billion shortfall.
- $8.8 billion was cut from California education in July 2009.

SLO CODEPINK's Connect the Dots campaign focuses on the disproportionate amount of money allocated to defense and how the resulting lack of funding for other services is affecting our local community.
On August 8 at the Creative Day for Women, we set up a carnival booth and raised over $300 for the Food Bank, which has been reduced to providing one bag of groceries to each recipient family.
On August 30 after the Cayucos Budget Event, we presented a $150 check at the Vets Hall fundraiser to Larry Brebes, a local musician without health insurance, who will be on dialysis for the rest of his life because of a cancerous kidney.
Anyone who wants to make a contribution to Larry can do so by mailing a check in his name to CODEPINK, P.O. Box 72, Arroyo Grande, Ca. 93421.

MOTHERS FOR PEACE
is raising funds for ongoing legal interventions. A recent example of their litigation efforts is a ruling from the 9th Circuit of Appeals that mandated a terrorist-impact analysis be included in an environmental review of Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s proposed nuclear waste storage facility. On January 19, 2007 the U.S. Supreme Court let this appellate ruling stand.
Please designate Mothers for Peace as the organization you want to receive a percentage of every dollar you spend at the grocery store. All you have to do is sign up at Scolaris, Ralphs or Albertsons.
